Jpg files and some help when pasting them into a word document. Why does the file size increase dramatically?

I have been helping my daughter prepare her CV which she wants to email to employment agencies over seas, before she travels. She has 10 Diplomas/Certificates to include at the end of her CV %26amp; I have changed them from word to .jpg format which reduced them significantly in size. In .jpg format the 10 files total 567KB ( about half a MB). After I paste those 10 files into the CV (a word document) the file size INCREASES to 3.854 MB, which when combined with the rest of her CV comes to a toal file size of more than 4MB. This file size is too large to email easily ( she uses hotmail). Can someone please HELP. Why do the jpg files increase so much in size?. What can I do to get the total CV (including .jpg's) down to a more manageable %26amp; user friendly size?. Thanks

Here's what you need to do: Edit the pictures to size and quality *before* you insert them in the CV. It seems clear you are inserting full-size, unedited files and then adjusting their size inside the document. If you edit them first, before you insert them, their size will dramatically smaller, and if you adjust the quality level you will find you can make the files much smaller while retaining much if not most or all of their original quality and impact. You will do fine with almost any photo editor -- crop, resize, adjust quality until the saved file is much, much smaller.
