Windows Vista: Fed up of File Size in KB

I do NOT like this tweak in Windows Vista where they have made all files in the %26quot;Details%26quot; view of explorer exhibit their file size in KB. In Windows XP we had a reasonable and quickly understandable view - all files above 1MB used to have their file sizes displayed in MB.

Now in Vista I'm stuck with this dumb KB thing where I have to deal with estimating general size of captured video from numbers like %26quot;34567891 KB%26quot;. What nonsense! It is SO user unfriendly! I don't need to know that my file is thousands of kb's! I know that a captured video file is GOING to be %26quot;huge%26quot;! Duh!!!

Does anyone know a tweak/tool or regedit or even where I can find an option to change this behaviour natively in Vista? I want my files in explorer's %26quot;Details%26quot; view to be shown the old way - in kb all the way to 1MB and then in MB's there after... in fact, in GB after reaching 1GB would be great too!!!

I'm sure lots of people miss that old convenience!
Windows Vista: Fed up of File Size in KB
Its not like that in Windows Vista. You changed something, don't blame Microsoft for your mess up. PEBKAC!

Total paging file size (virtual memory) won't keep its settings.?

I have a dell xps 400 running on windows xp. I started having problems where programs would shut themselves down or portions of my programs wouldn't run. Then it started telling me I didn't have enough virtual memory.

I checked the virtual memory. It was set on system managed size, but would never allocate itself more than the 1553 mb that were recommended. I changed it to custom size, with a minimum of 2500 mb and a maximum of 3500 mb.

This works great and fixed all my problems, only now when I reboot my computer it changes itself back to system managed size with 1553 mb. Anyone know how to fix this???
Total paging file size (virtual memory) won't keep its settings.?
That 1553 is what the computer uses normally. It will always stay at that number if the computer stays the same. Increasing the number doesn't really change what the computer will use, it will just allow that allocated memory to be used if say your computer starts using a lot of resources. If the setting sticks and your computer is running better you should not worry about it.

If it resets back to the old setting after you reboot then it means your CMOS battery is failing.
Total paging file size (virtual memory) won't keep its settings.?
    oh yes good ol dell
Click the 'SET' button on the screen of the virt. mem. settings before you click 'OK'. This button is positioned right next to the min/max values you set for the virtual memory.
You have to remember to press the [set] button. I had a friend do that. If that doesn't work you may have to do a reinstall XP

I checked Microsoft's knowledge base and came up with nothing on this issue. But that's not saying much.

Also as a recommendation set the minimum and maximum size to the same thing. This prevents addition and removal of %26quot;allocated%26quot; space and that cuts down on writing overall.
I have a Dell, but I never had that problem.

How do I compress an image on a Macbook?

I need to change the file size of an image and possibly the file type to a jpeg in order to upload it onto the net. Im new to Macs and can't find anyway to do this! Please help!
How do I compress an image on a Macbook?
    iPhoto can do just that.

Drag and drop the file to iPhoto's icon on the Dock. iPhoto %26gt; Share menu %26gt; Export, you can choose the size and format. Export to the Desktop then upload to web.

Preview can change the format from File %26gt; Save As but it doesn't resize images like iPhoto.

How do you make a picture smaller on Photoshop?

I want to make a collage of my friends on photoshop but how do u make the picture smaller. I want to make them smaller not change the file size!
How do you make a picture smaller on Photoshop?
I dont have the program open in front of me so I will have to tell you what to look for. In the file menu somewhere look for %26quot;resample%26quot; You can make it any size or format you want
How do you make a picture smaller on Photoshop?
only hit ctrl+t and u can change the size
To make the entire image smaller in appearance, you would use the %26quot;Image Size%26quot; command. To make individual pieces, or layers, of an image smaller (or larger, or tweaked or whatever) select the layer in question in your layers pallete, and then %26quot;Free Transform%26quot; or %26quot;Command T%26quot; on a mac (I forget the PC equiv, mb CTRL T or ALT T) and it brings up a border around the subject matter in question that you can drag, shift drag, etc.

photo shop amnd other software will allow you to try different methods: reduce the resolution and/or storage type, number of colours etc. Hope that is what you mean.
How do i copy my pictures to a CD?
You only need to select %26quot;My Pictures%26quot; and select all from the folder you want to burn to CD....Then Copy to CD.......

BUT - if any ONE of the pictures are too large (in memory size) you will find that they do not show on the TV. Answer is to %26quot;Compress%26quot; each slide until it is small enough (in memory size). You can do this individually or all at once via Microsoft Picture Manager if you have MS-Office. BUT...take a copy of them before you compress them otherwise you might get poor results if you want to enlarge them later on. DVD's seem to hang up if any ONE slide is bigger than 1.5 to 2 MB.

Additional - If your DVD doesn't allow you to show one picture after another (manually or timed) it is probably because the files are too large. If they are NOT then the show will go on.....

You only need to worry about the size if the %26quot;Slideshow%26quot; freezes up. It's then that you need to compress.

I use Nero to burn my pictures. You can change resolution and size with this one.

Changing the megabytes of a file?

This will probably sound stupid, but I'm very confused.

I'm trying to upload a bunch of images to a stock site, but they say they want %26quot;40mb tiff files (quality 9)%26quot;. My photos are all jpgs, and I don't think they're big enough right now.

Question #1: how do I find out how many megabytes my files currently are? I have photoshop elements, if that helps, but it doesn't say anything about the megabytes when I go to %26quot;image size%26quot;.

Question #2: how do I change the size of all of my images, if they're not big enough? I know how to save them as .tiff files, but I don't know how to change the megabyte size.

    Please help!

You could try right clicking the photo and click properties. it should say it there.

And for making them bigger, i dunno. the only think i can think of is to try going onto you're image editing software and resizing it and making it larger. Although when ever i do that it blurs it kinda.

Why is my file transfer speed slow?

I have a small home network with 4 machines on it. It utilizes a wireless network. I have used it ocassionally to transfer files form one machine to another. In the past I could xfer a large file, say 400 mb in about 3-5 minutes. Recently something has changed as now the same size file takes maybe 90 minutes if it goes anywhere at all.

Any ideas on what may have changed?
Why is my file transfer speed slow?
I also have a home network with 4 machines, but only one uses the wireless part of the network. From time to time when my son is accessing his online game and we are competing for bandwidth (his machine is hard wired) my wireless laptop starts to lag. There are two things that sometime works for me:

    1. click on the system tray icon for the wireless network and select repair. This disables and re enables the wireless card, then get a new IP address. This works most of the time. or......

    2. power down your router and power it back up, but make sure everyone on the network knows what your doing, because you will interrupt file transfers and internet access. Sometimes I have to do both.

If it continues us may want to update your router's software. See your routers Mfg. web site for update downloads.
Why is my file transfer speed slow?
Check if there are other WLANS nearby (neighbours), if that is the case and they use the same frequency this might be the problem.

The default setting of common routers often use the same frequencies.
Use what Tenax said however If that doesn't work

How can I increase an image's file size?

I've been collecting photos for my senior yearbook, and I like to open them up in PSP9 so that I can crop them and brighten them up a little and whatnot. After recently sending in a batch of photos, my yearbook supervisor told me that the file size was too small to work with. Many of the edited files are now around 36.0 KB, but the non-edited photos are a good couple of hundred KB.

Is there any way I can *increase* the file size of these photos without losing the aesthetic changes I made to them? I'm not particularly tech-savvy, so...gah. Can anyone help me out here?
How can I increase an image's file size?
Unfortunately, no.. they will become pixelated.. dithered.. You must take the largest size possible and reduce.. If you took the pictures, all digital camera take at least 2 Mega pixel.. if you are downloading them off the web, I would look for higher res pictures (300 DPI (dots per inch) or better) .. you can find some here: http://www.o2-photo.com/ or a pay site like Istock Photo http://www.istockphoto.com/index.php
How can I increase an image's file size?
there is only thing can do is

open another huge file sizes picture and past ur on top of this and replace it
Photoshop is close to magical but it does NOT make an image better, you can tweak it to make it look the way you think it's better. with that said you 'can' increase the size of an image. all you have to do is to go to Image%26gt;image size%26gt; and change the pixel count and/or dpi count. the image, in your case (36k) will be very very very bad. but it would could be blown up in size to 25-35 mb if you want it to.

How do i convert TIFF files to JPEG's in photoshop without losing the image size or resolution?

I need to convert my TIFF files to JPEGs in for a project i am working on. I tired just resaving all my files and JPEGS but completly lost my image size and resolution- it resaved the images as much much smaller files

How do i convert them without it changing the size or resolution
How do i convert TIFF files to JPEG's in photoshop without losing the image size or resolution?
It somewhat depends on your image editing program.

Some better ones have a slide scale for jpg image compression and you can have a jpg with hardly any compression at all. I do not know why you lost image size. All jpg does is change the file size in mb's or kb's..

PSPX2 (and the others) allows a compression slide scale to compress a lot, or a little. The actual pixel size of the image remains the same. A 3000x2000 image may be compressed as a jpg from less than 1mb (very heavy compression and looks bad) to over 12mb and looks great.. But it remained 3000x2000 pixels.

Your not doing something right. The image size should not change as you change formats.

    Bob - Tucson
How do i convert TIFF files to JPEG's in photoshop without losing the image size or resolution?
You can't. Tiff files are non compressed files while Jpegs are compressed. The best you can do is to save the Jpeg files as the highest quality with the least compression. This will turn a 40mb tiff file into about a 5 or 6mb jpeg. Converting to Jpeg doesn't actually change the physical size of the picture. It would still be xxxx pixels by 0000 pixels. It just compresses the data and reduces the file size.

How to reduce file size of a video (avi, mpeg, mkv,mp4) without affecting its frame size, audio codec and etc?
    Generally speaking, you can't.

The reason the video is 199MB is because that is all the data for the file, it is 199MB of picture, frame size, audio codec, etc.

There are probably some more advanced encryption methods you can apply, compressing the data without any loss of quality, but chances are it is using pretty decent compression already

To change the size from 199MB to 100MB would require almost half the data to be removed, so unless you can pioneer a new data compression method that is twice as efficient as avi, divx, mkv then sorry, it is impossible.

  • How do you change the size of a pdf document that’s already created?

I’m trying to reduce a file size of a PDF so I can put into a website. When I get the PDF each is page is 11”x 22” and has 20 pages in the file. When I upload it to my server it takes at least 10 min. to upload. After I go to the web address to check it out, the page takes 3 or 4 min. until I can see it. How do change the PDF file size so I can speed up the process?

The problem is the PDF file had already been created, so I don’t have the original file or access it.
How do you change the size of a pdf document that’s already created?
Another suggestion for %26quot;speeding up%26quot; the PDF page download speed from server is you can optimize your PDF file for %26quot;Fast Web Viewing%26quot;.

This is especially useful for transferring a large PDF file over the web, normally, when transfer a PDF file over the web, the PDF file must be fully transferred to the client, if the PDF file is larger, it will take a long time for transferring the PDF file, for the PDF document has been optimized for fast web viewing, a web server can transfer the optimized PDF document one page at a time, that means, the first page of the document will be presented to the user without having to wait for the full document to download from the web server. This will greatly enhanced the end user's experience.

For optimizing a PDF file for %26quot;Fast Web Viewing%26quot;, u can try a powerful PDF tool - %26quot;Foxonic%26quot;.

3 steps to optimize PDF file for %26quot;Fast Web Viewing%26quot; with Foxonic Professional:

    (1) set building mode to %26quot;All to One%26quot; and set destination PDF file name, location.

    (2) set %26quot;PDF Optimizing%26quot;: check %26quot;Enable optimize destination PDF file for %26quot;fast web viewing%26quot;%26quot;

    (3) select source PDF file and right click the selected PDF file, select %26quot;Build selected files to PDF%26quot;, then all the selected PDF files will be optimized automatically.

You can download and try it for free from here:

    http://www.caisdata.com/foxonic.htm
How do you change the size of a pdf document that’s already created?
Method 1 – Print file using Adobe Print driver

The easiest way to shrink a PDF file is printing the PDF document to a PDF file. Open the PDF file in Adobe Reader and print it to the Adobe PDF printer.

A lot of time this works really well and will significantly reduce the size of your PDF file. When you go to File – Print, choose Adobe PDF from the drop down list of printers:

Method 2 – Use Adobe Acrobat PDF Optimizer

Since version 7 of of Adobe Acrobat, there is a new option in the Advanced menu called PDF Optimizer. Now you’ll be brought to a screen that has a whole bunch of options to configure!.Click on the Audit space usage button in the top right to get a detailed listed of each component of the PDF file and exactly how much space it is using:

As you can see, there are six different things you can do to make a PDF file smaller including optimizing or down-scaling images, reconfiguring scanned pages, adjusting fonts, adjusting transparency, discarding objects, and cleaning up the PDF file.

Under Images, for example, you can downsample and compress the images to save space. This is really useful, especially if your images are at a really high resolution that is not needed. For view on the screen, you only need 72 pixels.

If you scanned a bunch of pages into your PDF, then click on the Scanned Pages option and mess around with the sliding bar, which goes from Small Size to High Quality. Adjust as needed.

The Discard Objects and Discard User Data are two really useful cleanup options for PDF files. You can basically get rid of all the extra junk that is normally stored in every PDF file. You can remove tags, flatten form fields, etc.

For Discard User Data, you can get rid of comments, document information, metadata, object data, file attachments, data from other applications, and more.

Finally, the Clean Up tab does a few more housekeeping tasks like compressing the entire file and optimizing the PDF for fast web view.

Method 3 try tools such as Free PDF Compressor 1.12 , Shrink PST File 2.0 , Tweak PDF 1.33 etc.
In version 9, there is an option under document 'reduce size'. use this option it will reduce drastically the size of the pdf. doc.
If you want to reduce your PDF file size for easy reading, you can try A-PDF Scan Optimizer. This software is professional on optimizing PDF files especially scanned PDF files, such as de-skew, convert to black/white, reduce file size, delete blank pages, etc.. The program provides several ways to reduce file size: By DPI, By Scale, By Width and Height.

Does the pixel count change after compression?

Well, My Science project is due in two days, I've got everything basically done. I had to compress JPEG images. But I need some sort of %26quot;Data%26quot; to show that there was a difference in the image, Though it is very obvious. I know the file size changed but how would I be able to say something about the quality, in something that has numbers? .-.
Does the pixel count change after compression?
JPG compression is of a science of it's own and is somewhat a guarded secret.

The name %26quot;JPEG%26quot; stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, the name of the committee that created the standard. The group was organized in 1986, issuing a standard in 1992, which was approved in 1994 as ISO 10918-1. JPEG is distinct from MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group), which produces compression schemes for video.

The JPEG standard specifies both the codec, which defines how an image is compressed into a stream of bytes and decompressed back into an image, and the file format used to contain that stream.

If the amount of compression is too much your image will look very blocky and jagged. The physical size, say 3000x2000 pixels does not change, but the contents INSIDE these dimensions, do, and sometimes with very bad results.

JPG's are like freeze dried foods. The water has been taken out and the food is smaller, lighter and looks like heck until you put water back in, however, once a image is a JPG, it is forever %26quot;ruined%26quot; even if a little, and you can not %26quot;re-add water%26quot; to make it whole again.

Instead of showing numbers, show a series of pictures with different levels of compression along with Googled text on how JPG's work, or don't, and show the bad image results with too much compression..

What Data you could show could be screen grabs of the file size as each level of compression is applied and the image now takes up less and less space, but now looks worse and worse..

    Good luck..

    Bob - Tucson
Does the pixel count change after compression?
the %26quot;resolution%26quot; means pixels per mm or something like that, the higher resolution the clearer the picture and greater number of pixels. if you're using a program like adobe photoshop it will tell you the resolution under image size. normal pictures from the internet are usually 72 pixels, if you increase it to 150, the picture shrinks but is clearer. the human eye cannot distiguish anything clearer than approx 150 pixels so its not worth going higher than that, though it is possible.

How to make a ringtone with audacity?

I'm trying to take a 20 second piece of a song, import it into audacity, and then send it to my phone through email. My only problem is that when I save the 20 second sound clip it is a lot larger than I want it to be. I want it to be less than 1 mb but no matter what I try I can't change the file size. Is there any way to either compress the file with audacity or lessen the sound quality so it doesn't take up so much space?
How to make a ringtone with audacity?
Make sure you're exporting the file as a .MP3 file. You do (File -%26gt; Export...). Then under save as type, select MP3 file. If you were using WAV or the uncompressed type, it would explain the big file size.

    Hope this helps!
How to make a ringtone with audacity?
When you import it just reduce the Project Rate - bottom left in Audacity.

There is also a very full and useful guide to using Audacity to make ringtones here:

    Might be worth reading!

How can I keep my file from changing its format once it's uploaded on another computer?

    This happened to me once:

I saved my powerpoint presentation in my flash drive for our report and when I opened it in our school computer, the font sizes was bigger than it originally was; thus parts of text can't be seen on the screen and our slides appeared messy and unorganized.

How do I avoid this from happening again? I wouldn't want to fix text sizes on the spot and right before our report because there might not be enough time to do so.
How can I keep my file from changing its format once it's uploaded on another computer?
The problem is not with your file. You will need to change the resolution of the monitor/projector of the machine used for your presentation.
How can I keep my file from changing its format once it's uploaded on another computer?
The file didn't change, the computer it was used in did. The fonts displayed depend on the fonts installed in the computer in which the file is displayed, not on the fonts in the computer in which it was created. The version of Powerpoint will also have an effect. The files is displayed by the Powerpoint program - if the school is using a different version, you may see differences from what the file looked like in your computer.

This is just the way Powerpoint presentations work - there's not much you can do to change it, except to use only fonts that you know are installed on the computer you're going to make the presentation in.

Jpg files and some help when pasting them into a word document. Why does the file size increase dramatically?

I have been helping my daughter prepare her CV which she wants to email to employment agencies over seas, before she travels. She has 10 Diplomas/Certificates to include at the end of her CV %26amp; I have changed them from word to .jpg format which reduced them significantly in size. In .jpg format the 10 files total 567KB ( about half a MB). After I paste those 10 files into the CV (a word document) the file size INCREASES to 3.854 MB, which when combined with the rest of her CV comes to a toal file size of more than 4MB. This file size is too large to email easily ( she uses hotmail). Can someone please HELP. Why do the jpg files increase so much in size?. What can I do to get the total CV (including .jpg's) down to a more manageable %26amp; user friendly size?. Thanks
Jpg files and some help when pasting them into a word document. Why does the file size increase dramatically?
I believe Word stores images as bitmaps (each pixel has so much data specifying its color), or at least at very low compression. If your JPG is going to be staying in the same place and you're not transmitting this document to others, you can insert a link to the image, rather than the image itself.

In Word 2000 and 2002, these instructions are slightly different. I remember using the feature, but not the steps to follow. In Word 2003:

    - Insert -%26gt; Picture -%26gt; From File

    - Select your file

    - Rather than clicking %26quot;Insert%26quot;, click the little arrow to the right of it, and say %26quot;Link to File%26quot;
Jpg files and some help when pasting them into a word document. Why does the file size increase dramatically?
because word documents are meant for words. it makes the jpg bigger because it needs more pixels to show up more clear.
The .jpgs do not increase in file size. They may increase in apparent size if they have a dpi (dots per inch) greater than 72, since monitors only display 72 dpi.

So if you use a picture with a dpi of 300, the pictures will show about 16 times as big. In order for them to appear smaller, you can use the drag corners to change their size.

I would not lower the file sizes of the jpg s, as that may decrease the quality of the printouts afterward.

I think that if you add the file sizes of all the JPEGs together you'll be close to the final file size of the word document.

Even so, with regular dial up service she should be able to download the whole thing in about 20 to 30 minutes max.
Wondering if you should just change them back to word documents.
Can you make it a PDF?

How do i send a 350mb xvid file to someone over the internet?

i want to send a 350mb xvid file to someone in another country and i was wondering if there was a way i could email it or something along the lines of that.or you could tell me how to change the size of the file to 100mb cas then i could use yousend it thanks
How do i send a 350mb xvid file to someone over the internet?
It sounds like you're asking how to lower the filesize. There's two ways to do this, one will lower the video quality, and the other will take much longer, but preserve the quality.

The first is simple, import the video into Windows movie maker, drag it to the timeline, click File%26gt;Save Movie File, choose the location, and when it asks about video quality, select %26quot;more options%26quot; then %26quot;best fit to filesize%26quot; and put in 99MB or however much you want (if you use filefactory.com to send it you can make the video up to 299MB).

The second is to put the file in a split archive. Download and install winrar (see sources), right click the video and click %26quot;add to archive%26quot;. in the options specify %26quot;Store%26quot; as the compression method and where it says %26quot;split to volumes, bytes%26quot; but in 100000000 for yousendit or 300000000 for filefactory. This will create 2-4 new files that contain the video. You'll have to upload all of the files to send him the video, and he'll need to have winrar as well to extract the video, but like i sadi above, it will preserve the quality.
How do i send a 350mb xvid file to someone over the internet?
There's lots of sites for what your asking, google transfer large files. lnstant messengers can handle big files too but you'ld have to check on how big.
use winrar to zip the file before sending..

    separate it to parts...like part1,part2,part3

Best image format with lowest file weight (KB) size?

our company is programming new image format. we can convert the images to our new format. for ex an image with resolution 1280x800px (145 KB) when converted to our new format the size has been changed to 130 bite without change the resolution.

We would like to know, do you know any similar format with lowest file weight?
Best image format with lowest file weight (KB) size?
    this is total erroneous garbage.

    you can't change a 145KB file into 130 bytes, it's impossible.

Even if such a technology was in development they would not be consulting Yahoo Answers for anything!
Best image format with lowest file weight (KB) size?
It's depended on the image is complex or not. If the image is complex, JPG and PNG is the lowest file weight format out there. If the image is not complex like vector graphics, it could be very small.

HTML FORM - changing of file default value?

    here is the code.

    %26lt;form action=%26quot;myupload.php%26quot; method=post enctype=%26quot;multipart/form-data%26quot;%26gt;

    submit this file: %26lt;input type=file name=%26quot;userfile%26quot; size=%26quot;20%26quot;%26gt;

    %26lt;input type=submit%26gt;

    %26lt;/form%26gt;

    %26lt;input type=submit%26gt;

    %26lt;/form%26gt;

now can i change the value of %26lt;input type=file name=%26quot;userfile%26quot; size=%26quot;20%26quot;%26gt; i tried to upload a file c:\mypic.jpg without clicking on browse button. i also tried like this http://domain.com/myupload.php?userfile=c:\mypic.jpg but its not working.. any solution??????
HTML FORM - changing of file default value?
The code: submit this file: %26lt;input type=file name=%26quot;userfile%26quot; size=%26quot;20%26gt; relies on the user to click the 'browse' buttont o browse for the file on the local harddrive to upload.

What exactly is it that you are trying to accomplish? Are you 1) trying to upload the file from your local harddrive or 2) trying to upload a file from a remote location (like a web site or something different?

To upload %26quot;c:\mypic.jpg%26quot; you **NEED** to click the browser button to upload.

On %26quot;myupload.php%26quot; how are you handeling the file that is being uploded? Are you 1) saving it on the web server in a folder (ideally IMAGE folder if its an image) or saving it to the dB?

Do I lose quality when I save in a picture in a smaller file than the original?

I save in the nikon raw format,,I was told to keep a set in tiff but the files are very large. if II re size the file in a smaller version can I change the file back to a larger one without loss of quality??
Do I lose quality when I save in a picture in a smaller file than the original?
No, you will lose quality if you go from large to small and then back to large. Keep an original set in tiff format, and then make smaller copies, that way you have the best of both worlds. File size should not be an issue, storage is incredibly cheap.

Is there a possibility to change the video size after converting amv files?

Is there a possibility to change the video size after converting amv files?
Once you already convert it, you cannot change now your .amv video, you need to convert it again, before you convert make sure to change your frame size in 160x120.
Is there a possibility to change the video size after converting amv files?
As far as I know, you cannot change the file size if they are already in amv format. You should convert the original files to 160x120 in your amv converter tool.

Jpg files and some help when pasting them into a word document. Why does the file size increase dramatically?
Use a Web site intended for transfers of large files.

There are several such sites, all easy to use. Also see e-mailing of large files.

    http://www.yousendit.com/

    http://www.dropload.com/

    http://www.sendthisfile.com/

YouSendIt lets you upload files up to 1 gigabyte in size. Then you notify to the recipient to download only that specific file.

The files can be downloaded any time for the first week鈥攁fter that they are deleted.

Dropload is another site dedicated to e-mailing large files (up to 100 megabytes). Registration is free.

Type in the recipient's e-mail address. Dropload will be sent an e-mail together with a link for downloading the file. Again, the files can be downloaded any time for the first week鈥攁fter that they are deleted.
Jpg files and some help when pasting them into a word document. Why does the file size increase dramatically?
Well.. images are files that take some space. You inserted 10 of them into the word document. Images are files that contain pixel information (size, where every pixel goes in the picture) so the amount of data is a lot bigger than ordinary text. My suggestion? Find a file sharing site and send your daughter the link to the CV.

Not just one or two but several files. Can I change the attributes of the folder instead for each file individually. I would like an simply and easy to reduce all folder files to a smaller and usable size

Open file in Adobe phototshop or Photoready and save for web optimize. It will save the file in jpg format with very less file size
How do I convert several files to a smaller size so I can transfer them to associated for viewing?
Open them and send them to a Zip File. That will do it for you.
Try Irfanview.com You can use the download to open almost anyfile, convert it and then use Irfan to open it, try before you buy.
    1. Right click on folder. ---%26gt; send to ----%26gt; compressed(zipped) folder

    2.use ACDsee Software.
Use disk spanning in Winzip. If your folder is large (e.g. 100MB), it will split your folder into several zip files with a specified size for each zip file. Alternatively, you can use ACDSee software to reduce the quality of your photos and the sizes.

If you have a broadband connection, why not try www.sendspace.com or www.mediafire.com which allows you to send very big files to others, if you are not willing to sacrifice your photos quality.

What i mean by convert is if you want to also download the youtube videos to your ipod or iphone or psp or zunes then just go to this site to watch my video

listed below!! Converintg videos online is a very safe and best way to convert. This way you will make a better use of hard drive. Also by the way I am certified micorsoft tech!

You can use Videora to convert most file types to mp4. I suggest you convert those avi files to wmv for the Zune unless you want to have your Zune convert those files as you sync. I don't bother with mp4 anymore because my Zune converts them all. If you decide to give wmv a try then you can use Windows Movie Maker to convert avi files to wmv. Just pay attention to the resolution size. You don't want any thing larger than 320x240.

edit the size of the pics to 1/4 of the screen size (average screen size these days is 1024x768) so if you make the pics like 240x480 or close to it they should fit.

Elements works the same as photoshop in most things. In Photoshop, CTRL-ALT-I (Mac CMD-OPT-I) and a dialog comes up to resize them.

Set the size you want and click ok.

you can use winrar to compress bulk files at once. Go to cnet. Find downloads. search for winrar and download it. After the installation you can go over to the file that holds your pictures and right click to compress with winrar.

if yall can help, tht will b great thnx!
How do i change the size of a video that i record?
theres the software, search up google or look at the site to learn how to use it =),

    not into explaining things extensively...
How do i change the size of a video that i record?
two options from the top of my head:

save it with Windows Movie Maker as a .wmv file

or use Divx converter to convert it to .divx
it's in a raw format, compress it by using a video utility; I use STOIK Video Converter, www.download.com note this is just interface to the backend libraries for video that you already have, or install separately.

I think a compression using DivX for video, MP2 for audio would give you 50 megs with respectable quality.

How do you embed a WMA file onto a Powerpoint?

I'm using the newest version of Powerpoint. I have followed the instructions for increasing the embedded audio file size %26gt; Increase Maximum size to 50MB%26gt; make sure to use a WMA file%26gt; reinsert after making these changes%26gt; but it's still not embedding. For some reason it keeps linking it instead of embedding it.

Any ideas on how to get Powerpoint to embed it?
How do you embed a WMA file onto a Powerpoint?
To embed audio file, you need to follow a couple of steps.

    1. First of all, you should make sure that the music file is in WAV format (MP3 file can only be linked, not embedded).

    2. By default, the file which is smaller than 100 KB in size would be embedded. If you WAV file is larger than 100KB, you need to change the file size limitation first. It can be changed in the Sound Options group on the contextual menu when you double click the speaker icon on the slide.
How do you embed a WMA file onto a Powerpoint?
well i'm not sure Powerpoint embeds the video, i guess it only links to the location of the WMA file -%26gt; this has the down side that if the file location changed the movie wont play!
Maybe you can try another way which can embed all kinds of sound files.

Converting your PowerPoint presentation to Flash use some third party presentation tools, Wondershare PPT2Flash Std(http://www.sameshow.com/powerpoint-to-fl鈥?/a> for instance. It can help you create Flash-based presentation with all the original effects retained. Of course, all the sound files will be embedded in the presentation. You can send the Flash-based presentation to your friends and different computers.

Re saving PNG to JPEG to reduce file size?

Right, I run a website and have recently noticed that some of my png images are a lil large when it comes to file sizes. Messing around, I realised that by re saving them as jpeg, I can cut about 200KB off the file size, and not notice the difference (I had the two images on a slideshow, and you could not see that it was changing at all.)

Would it be a good idea to convert all my images to jpeg, or am I missing something here?
Re saving PNG to JPEG to reduce file size?
It's okay to convert to JPEG. No problem.

The only thing that you have to worry about is if the item you're displaying is color critical, then you may have to stick with PNG format.

Other than that, save yourself some space and it will increase the speed at which your website refreshes or displays a page.

Re saving PNG to JPEG to reduce file size?
When you save a PNG that doesn't contain transparencies as a JPEG your not losing anything visible.

For a demonstration of what you are giving up when you save to JPEG use Photoshop to create an image that is 50% transparent. Now convert that image into JPEG. When viewed in a browser you will note that in the JPEG image you are viewing doesn't render opacity. Those values are removed.

    Q) Can I save space?

    A) Yes you can save space by saving as a JPEG.

    Q) Is there a difference between the formats?

    A) Yes and it's not limited to opacity. Take a look at the link below for more information about why PNG is better.
Its perfectly fine to convert them all if you don't care about losing some of the image data. In other words, if after conversion the difference is suitable for the %26quot;intended%26quot; use of the image, then by all means convert them. I do stress intended use here. If the use was for image comparison then converting to jpeg would not be a good idea.
The PNG file format is considered %26quot;lossless%26quot;, while the JPEG file format can be lossy, depending on several different factors.

If you plan on doing any editing to these images, then keep the PNG file format for editing, and save it in JPEG format for your website.

    Good Luck!
I'd recommend Photos to be converted to JPEGs. Full color images with complex graphics and no sharp lines may also benefit from JPEG.

However, for images that contains mostly flat colors and lots of sharp lines (e.g. buttons, graphs, vector images); it will be difficult to find a JPEG compression level that does not sacrifice quality.
Jpg files are lower quality than png files. But since the web is lower quality than even a jpg file, you'll probably never see the difference. (You will if you specify picture size on the page - a lot of jpg files will pixelate if you do that.)
it's a good idea to convert them, but if you're using a large picture and making it look small in your website, you might want to make the picture small and then upload it again.
Try this batch picture resize tool.

    Size Does Matter?

I own a Gateway notebook computer. I recently wiped it clean and reloaded everything. All is well except everything is a little large in size. I have a moon widget on my desktop and its a little oblong.

    In help I've tried

    1. Show, hide, or resize desktop icons

    2. Change the size of virtual memory

    3. Change webpage text size in Internet Explorer

    4. Change the size or resolution of a picture

    5. Change the file size or quality level of a JPEG picture

Still, the monitor image is not quite correct.

Even the Windows button on the taskbar, at the bottom of my screen, is a little too large.

Please help strink it all just a little.
    Size Does Matter?
Right click on an empty space on the desktop. select the settings tab. look for screen resolution and increas the slider for more space. If everything looks ok. select yes to keep the settings. If you cannot move the slider anymore to the left then you have to reload the video driver. Go to gateway and select your computer model all the drivers can be downloaded from there.
    Size Does Matter?
It sounds like your screen resolution is off... or you don't have the correct video driver.
if you cant change your resolution you may need to download drivers for your video card...good luck

How do I change the size of .PDF or .AI document?

I need to submit a brochure design to a printing company. I've already submitted the file for the cover with no problem, but the inside of the brocure, after converting it to .PDF is 55.1 Mb.

There is a file upload page, but the max size that it takes is 50 Mb.

I tried sending it as an email attachment, but that didn't work.

I even put it in a zip folder, but it doesn't seem to have changed the file size at all (am I doing something wrong?)

    Does anyone have any suggestions?
How do I change the size of .PDF or .AI document?
You could upload the file to a website like

    http://www.yousendit.com/

Then e-mail the link to them.

If you have Adobe Acrobat, it has an option to optimize the PDF... Since you can't edit a PDF with Acrobat Reader, you need the full Acrobat.

    Advanced %26gt; PDF Optimizer

It will make your PDF smaller in size, though you may need to tinker with the optimizer a bit before you get what you want.
How do I change the size of .PDF or .AI document?
Great answer. Just tinkering around with the numbers in 'Downsample%26quot; is all you need. I changed mine from 150 to 100 for images above 225 and bingo, it went down from 7.1MB to a few hundred KB. Thanks for the great answer.

    Keep up the good work.

Try using 7zip and ultra compression - it might just get it down to size.

Or you could split it into 2 files with half the pages in each (copy the file to another file, delete the first half in one, delete the second half in the other).

How do you reduce the size of an indesign file so I can email it and not make it a pdf?

I want to email the actual indesign document so that the person can open it in indesign and change things. I don't want it to be a pdf. Right now it is to big of a file to upload to email. I need to reduce it.
How do you reduce the size of an indesign file so I can email it and not make it a pdf?
You should try exporting the document as a .jpg. low quality. (NOTE: This WILL make the document low quality and might look fuzzy/pixelated) E-mailing InDesign documents as any form is frowned upon just because most documents will be over 10MB. Most e-mail servers will only send under 10MB so try to keep your file size down to under 10.

Another tip to keep it down is to make sure your images used in the document are saved 'to size' meaning that they are saved at 100% scaled size in Photoshop prior to importing them into the InDesign doc. For example, you have a 5%26quot; x 5%26quot; image placed into InDesign and you want to keep it 5%26quot; x 5%26quot;. Make sure in Photoshop it's not like 40%26quot; x 40%26quot; at 300dpi. Make sure you save a copy at the 5%26quot; x 5%26quot; - and THEN import it in. That will reduce size of your doc.

    Good luck!
How do you reduce the size of an indesign file so I can email it and not make it a pdf?
InDesign files are going to be big because of the nature of the file. You're working with a publishing software which has to hold a TON of data, especially if you're working with images and different fonts and such.

If you really need to get the file to someone else, I would suggest doing it in person (CD, Flashdrive, etc.) or using some sort of online storage space. Examples could be Dropbox which will give you 2GB of free space online and might come in handy for your collaborating efforts. Just Google for Dropbox.

For the same resolution of a JPEG image, does a different file size signify a lost in quality?

My digital camera captures images at 2816 by 2112 for about 1.7 MB. But when I open them in Microsoft Paint and save without changes, the size reduces to about 800 KB. Resolution remains the same. I compared by zooming in but can't tell of any quality lost. Should I continue so as to reduce space? Has the quality been reduced?

I want to keep my pictures in high quality but it's a waste of space if the quality lost is insignificant.

Hope that someone knows something. Thanks.
For the same resolution of a JPEG image, does a different file size signify a lost in quality?
The larger the file size the better the resolution. I shoot RAW files that are between 8 and 9MB ... when converted to a TIFF they get huge ... like 30MB

You are not going to see any difference on you monitor .. it only resolves 72 DPI

High resolution is necessary for publishing and printing large images ... Always shoot at the highest resolution because you never know when you may get a shot that you will want to enlarge BIG.

2GB cards were $14 this weekend .. And if you save all your original files on a CD, you will not run out of space on your hard drive ... or you can do what we pros do .. get 500GB drives when they are on sale for under $100 each.

    About the memory ...

You don't have to do anything, Windows will do what is necesary.

    About the XP ....

hmmm .... the question is not quite clear
I have a pentium 4 and windows xp is on my computer BUT i just installed vista ultimate,?
Not sure about the XP/Vista question.

I personally notice XP works fine with 1GB of memory. Vista crawl with just 1GB of memory. 2GB will bring the better out of the Vista.

Vista will run with 1GB or lower but it will use the hard drive for the memory paging and that hurt your performance because hard drive is much slower memory access.

Not sure how old is your P 4 machine, make sure your computer supports bigger DRAM size.

WinRAR Changes the size of my file?

i downloaded 2 parts of a game on winRAR

1 was 499mb and the other was 486mb

i worked out on a calculator that it equals 985mb...

and i extract with WinRAR to my desktop

and it sais the file is 1.25GB!

ive tryed deleting the file and extracting it again

but it does the same thing!

there is no other files on the WinRAR file its just the 2 parts

i just need to know how to fit it on a 1GB memory card... i know how to put it on there but i need to know how to make it smaller so i can fit it on there
WinRAR Changes the size of my file?
WinRar is an archival program like winzip. I basically shrinks files so that they take up less space.
WinRAR Changes the size of my file?
It's 1.25GB because the point of compressing a file (.RAR or .ZIP) is to make it smaller. When you extract the files, it becomes it's original size before the compression. To put that on your memory card, extract the files, then compress it with winrar and it might fit. (1GB memory card isn't exactly 1GB, might be 0.90GB or something)
winRAR uses a compressor when you archive files in it. When you extract the files they go back to the usual size. That is why people use it, so they can send files for less memory/bandwidth.

If this is for a PSP game etc, then you should look for files at max 800mb to fit on a gig stick, because of all the files already on the PSP. If it is for the PSP, and the file is an ISO you can compress it to a CSO to save room. This only works for the PSP though :P
WinRAR is a program that compresses files so that they can be transferred easier and faster over the internet. After you download a WinRAR file, you can't use it until you uncompress it to a location on your hard drive, at which point it expands the file to it's original size, which in this case was 1.25GB. After you uncompress the file, you can just delete the original WinRAR archive (compressed file) if you want, because there's no need for it after you have uncompressed it already. Although it would probably be a good idea to back it up on a flash drive, CD, or DVD.

If you want to fit it on the Memory Card, then you'll need to put the WinRAR file archive on the Memory Card and then uncompress it again when you put it on the new computer.

Can i change the partion size of %26quot;Drive C%26quot; without losing all its file?
well...if you do have a D-Drive its mostly used for back ups and system restores. you can do it but i don't recommend it at your tech level.

your best bet is to buy a new hard drive and format it. then plug in your old C drive can copy the files over.

you can buy a new 1 terabyte HDD for about 80-90 USD.

Is there a free video converter for iPod Touch that retains the file size and preserves quality?

I recently bought an iPod Touch 8GB. I am new to Apple and it's products, however I have been using iTunes to manage my music for years now before I owned an iPod. As it turns out, all I've heard is true. The Apple iPod Touch (or iPhone for that matter) is a great product.

I find the 8GB space in my iPod, rather limiting. All the movies that I own are around 700-900MB in size. Is there a free video converter that retains the “maximum possible video quality” for the iPod .mp4 format yet not alters the size of the file? A few 100MB change more or less isn't an issue. In fact it would be better if the space occupied video decreases yet preserving the video quality for 480x320 resolution (iPod video aspect size).

At present I'm using %26quot;Xilisoft Video Converter 3.1.49 build-1207b%26quot;. I found that after converting my 700MB video files, my video files bloat upto, atleast 1.13GB! I don't want this because eve at 700MB the .avi format retains greater amount of picture quality. Also the audio track in the video appears to be a second or two, AHEAD of the video!

Long story short, can anybody please suggest me a good free video converter that works wonders for the iPod Touch/iPhone with minimum hassles, so as to avoid all the above mentioned problems?
Is there a free video converter for iPod Touch that retains the file size and preserves quality?

Depends on how much you're trying to compress it. If you're just barely above the limit, I'd try to RAR or ZIP it. If it's still too big, I'd seek out a video editing program. Google it and do the research, I've only used a few. They usually entail turning it into a smaller format by changing video or audio quality.

    2. the saving destination does not exist (i didn't get that)

    3. there is not enough disk space (which is so untrue; i still have 50GB)

When its talking about the saving destination, it means the folder you are trying to save it to. Make sure you set the path correctly. Other than that, try using a search engine to search for the exact text of the error message.

not be more than 20k. Please what are the step-by-step procedures of going about it using Adobe photoshop
I need to change the specification of a passport photo to Width 275k and Height 314 and the file size should?
Open your image, click Image--%26gt;Image Size...

Set the width and height properties accordingly. (Be sure to constrain the aspect ratio by clicking on the chain links icon. They should be linked together and not broken. Otherwise you will become a conehead.)

If you are having trouble with the file size then do this:

First resize your image to the proper width and height.

    Then click File--%26gt;Save for Web...

Experiment with the settings or use the help manual.

How to change the size of the thumbnails in Windows Explorer?

These thumbnails are often too small to give a accurate impression of the file, more so if it is a complex graphic of some sort.

What I would like to do is, what can be done in Paint Shop Pro, re-size the thumbnails to give a decent representation of the graphics

I know the desktop icon size settings has no effect on and therefore NOTHING to do with the size of the file thumbnail views in Explorer.

So is there a registry value somewhere that can be changed to do what I want?

How can I change a picture on my computer from one that is HUGE to one that is normal size?

Its a jpeg file, and the size is something like 1.5 mb. Our camera has a high megapixel count, around 8 i think it is and its set for the highest setting. My problem is, when I open a picture for editing in paint, its wayyyyyyyyyyyy too big. How can i change the size, or how can I edit it? Appreciate any suggestions thanks!

what you need to do is re-assign the program that opens your JPG files, which is a J Peg or jpeg file...

and can be done with any file format..

right click on the image file.

    select properties..

look where it says Opens with..

accros from where it says that select change...

and then will come a list of programs..

select Windows Picture and fax viewer, which is the defalt for the windows operating system...

and if you dont have that option, open it with the program that you do know, that can handle images..

as long as its not Paint.exe
How can I change a picture on my computer from one that is HUGE to one that is normal size?
When you take a high resolution pic, it is going to take up a lot of space, like 1.5mb. I don't know that the paint program can do it, but I use Photoshop to change the resolution of the pic which will decrease its size
I faced the same problem and this software helped me out.

    %26quot;Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition%26quot;.

    Its very easy to use.

And provides powerful features like %26quot;AutoFix%26quot;, %26quot;Contrast Balancing%26quot; and lots more of them.
    photoshop 7.0 is great!
Use WebResizer at http://webresizer.com It is a free online crop and resize photo tool.
Forget Photoshop - it's expensive. And the %26quot;Starter Edition%26quot; is not really all that functional. Download and install the free IrfanView from http://www.irfanview.com/ . You can manipulate pictures easily with this software. I use it to resize pictures I'm posting on the web. By resizing the picture and then saving it (best saving it with a different file name) you'll find that the size is greatly reduced. My camera is set to its maximum resolution; when I resize photos to 1024x768 for the web, most of the JPG files end up about 200Kb. Another free software that does this type of thing but has many more %26quot;touch up%26quot; features for photos is Googe's Picasa.

Try either of the free softwares before going out and buying Photoshop Elements (which is quite comparable to either of the two free programs I mentioned) for $80-$90 on line. Or you could get the full blown Photoshop for just a shade over $600. Or you could stick with the free software. Your choice.
