If I save an 8.1 megapixel picture from Flickr, why does the size of the file change to only 280 kbs?

The pic i origanlly downloaded to flickr was 2.21 mb size. I rightclicked and saved it to my desktop from the website and now it is only 280 kb size. What happened?

Flickr doesn鈥檛 take the original space. If you selected online viewing or Large when you uploaded the picture that is the file size that will happen.

the file size was compressed. it likely lost quality (clarity) too.
its been compressed some how, sounds odd, did you select any options like resize for email or something??

a
Flickr has processed what you uploaded, and in the process they a) shrunk/re-sized the photo and b) re-saved it with more compression. Also:

1) don't confuse megapixels with megabytes. An 8 megapixel file will be, as your noted, about 2 to 3 megabytes in size.

2) when you upload it to Flickr, you're uploading the whole thing.

3) when you subsequently view it and right-click, you're only getting what Flickr has processed from what you originally uploaded. That processed file is considerably smaller, and in fact, the image is also probably smaller too, much smaller than your original.

4) Hopefully, you're not using Flickr to archive your photos.
